Lighting layers: what makes an evening

Ambient, Task, Accent

What makes a space feel bright in the morning and inviting in the evening is usually not one beautiful pendant but the right arrangement of lighting layers that can work independently of one another. The same room, with the same furniture, can feel entirely different simply because the lighting scheme has changed.

Lighting is also among the most expensive decisions to reverse in an interior. You can change the paint and replace the rug; but opening a circuit that is not in the ceiling means breaking into walls. That is why we discuss light long before any furniture is chosen.

Three layers, three separate jobs

Ambient lighting. The basic, functional light of the space — ceiling downlights, recessed lighting runs. Its job is to make the space safely usable, not to create atmosphere. The most neutral colour temperature (around 3000 K) is generally used here.

Task lighting. Light focused on the points where a particular job is done: a kitchen worktop, a desk, the front of a mirror. It is directed onto the working surface itself so that it does not cast a shadow.

Accent lighting. The warmer (2700 K and below), generally dimmable light that brings forward a piece of art, a textured wall or a seating corner. Turning the ambient layer down in the evening and leaving only this one switches the space immediately into an inviting mode.

The layers do not all need to be on at once — that is precisely the point. A room’s “evening mode” exists because one of the layers can be switched off. If they are all on a single switch, you have one scene, and it is usually the most tiring one.

Colour temperature: 2700 K or 3000 K?

Colour temperature describes whether the light leans yellow or white. In living spaces 2700 K is warm and restful; 3000 K reads slightly more neutral and clearer. From 4000 K upwards the light approaches daylight — meaningful at points that need visual sharpness, such as a kitchen worktop, a bathroom mirror or a desk, but cooling to a sitting room.

The real mistake is not in choosing the number but in mixing. When a 2700 K pendant sits alongside a 4000 K downlight in the same space, the eye reads it as a fault; both lights may be good, and the result still looks dirty. Choosing a single colour temperature for a space and departing from it deliberately where it is needed is the right approach.

Making colour read true: colour rendering

Two fittings of the same output can make the same surface look very different. What decides this is colour rendering (CRI/Ra) — how faithfully the light shows colour. Under a source with poor rendering, the warmth of timber, the veining of natural stone and the tone of a textile all fade; the material you spent weeks choosing never shows its real character.

In spaces where natural stone, timber and coloured surfaces are prominent, we prefer products with high rendering (Ra 90 and above). This is the side of lighting that protects your material budget: a well-chosen stone looking cheap under bad light is one of the most disappointing outcomes there is.

How not to place downlights in a ceiling

The most common mistake is to divide the ceiling into equal squares and set out a symmetrical grid of downlights. The method looks tidy on a reflected ceiling plan but does not work in the room: the light ends up where it falls geometrically, not where it is needed. The result is usually more fittings than necessary and, despite that, corners left dark.

Our approach runs in the opposite direction — we start by identifying which surface needs to be lit:

Another invisible detail is glare: if you can see the lamp directly, the fitting has been chosen wrongly. Deep-recessed downlights with the source set back are both more comfortable and make a space look more expensive — because your eye sees the surface being lit, not the light itself.

What changes room by room?

Where does concealed lighting work?

Strip lighting hidden in a cornice or beneath a run of furniture gives a space a soft fill light when used well; used badly, it turns into a dotted line across the ceiling. Three things make the difference: a strip of sufficient density, working within an aluminium profile and diffuser (so the dots are invisible and the heat is dissipated), and a recess designed deep enough to let the light spread.

Concealed lighting does not replace ambient lighting — it completes it. A living room resolved with strip lighting alone looks pleasant in the evening and remains unusable by day.

Dimmers and circuits: the cheapest lasting decision

Being able to control each layer from a separate circuit is one of the cheapest and longest-lasting decisions in a project. The cost of adding one more switch at first-fix stage is close to negligible; asking for the same thing later means opening a wall.

On the dimming side, the point to watch is compatibility: not all LED fittings dim, and those that do will not work with every dimmer. If fitting, driver and dimmer are not chosen together, the result is flicker, buzz or the light cutting out at the bottom of the range. Deciding which circuits will dim at the outset, and choosing products accordingly, is far easier than changing fittings afterwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many lighting layers does a living room need?

Two at minimum (ambient and accent); a third — task lighting — is usually added where there is a reading corner or a work area. More important than the number of layers is that they can be controlled from separate circuits.

Warm white or cool white?

In living spaces we generally prefer a warm white of around 2700–3000 K; only at task points such as a kitchen worktop is it worth going up to 3000–4000 K. The real rule is this: do not mix different colour temperatures in the same space.

How many downlights should go in the ceiling?

There is no fixed number — the count is determined by the surfaces and tasks to be lit, not by the symmetry of the ceiling. An evenly spaced grid of downlights usually means both more fittings than necessary and light in the wrong places.

Can LED lighting be dimmed?

Not all of it. The fitting, its driver and the dimmer all have to be compatible; an incompatible combination shows itself as flicker, buzz, or the light cutting out entirely at the bottom of the range. The circuits to be dimmed are identified at the outset and the products chosen accordingly.

How should a bathroom mirror be lit?

The light should reach the face from the front, at face height. Light from the ceiling alone casts shadows under the eyes and on the chin; fittings placed symmetrically on either side of the mirror remove that shadow. In a wet area, the fitting must carry an appropriate IP rating.

When should lighting decisions be made?

Before the electrical first fix. If the choice of fittings, the circuit layout and the decision to dim are not settled at that stage, adding them later means opening up walls — the cheapest decision in the project turns into its most expensive correction.
